What is the Relationship Between Blue Monarch and The Blue Chair?
The Blue Chair is involved in a unique collaboration between a non-profit and for-profit working together. The Blue Chair believes it is important for businesses to accept social responsibility and become part of the solution for women who have experienced difficulty obtaining and maintaining employment due to their unfortunate and harmful life circumstances.
Throughout the history of Blue Monarch, The Blue Chair in Sewanee has provided employment to many of the women of Blue Monarch. This collaboration started with gift basket design, then went to baking, and finally settled with the production of one product – granola, which has been extremely successful.

“Out of the Blue” Granola is carefully baked by hand in the Blue Chair on-site kitchen at the Blue Monarch facility. Besides the fact it’s a toasty, delicious, all natural product, it is very special because inside every bag is a photograph of one of the Blue Monarch women who baked the granola, along with her touching testimony of recovery on the back.

The granola is now sold in natural food markets, inns, gifts shops, and restaurants in Nashville, Franklin, Chattanooga, Huntsville, Asheville, and small towns in between. And The Blue Chair granola has just been accepted as a new vendor for Whole Foods in their three Tennessee locations!

How does this granola help Blue Monarch?

It provides flexible jobs for the women in the program after they have successfully completed a Blue Chair Work Ethics course
The women are able to contribute a portion of their income to Blue Monarch to support the cost of the services they receive
Blue Monarch gains new support from folks who enjoy the granola
The women of Blue Monarch gain self-confidence and become proudly independent
